The Diffrient World Chair: Designed With Ergonomics In Mind
Humanscale wanted to venture into all-mesh task seating and the outcome was the Diffrient World chair. Neils Diffrient set out to produce a fully functional task chair with an extremely minimalist design to top all the rest. Did he achieve that? From the fact that I use one at work, I am inclined to say yes, but I’ll let you decide.
By taking the laws of physics and removing the need for traditional mechanisms, the Diffrient World uses the user’s own body weight to auto adjust the reclining back for each individual without the constant need for having to pull levers and push buttons. This mechanism-free backrest works by pulling on two different parts on the frame to give a smooth, automatic and balanced reclining action. Designed with longevity in mind, the Diffrient World is constructed with minimal parts to ensure it remains affordable and will look as good in ten years as it does today.
The Diffrient World’s ingenious tri-panel mesh backrest which uses a Form Sensing Mesh Technology gives its user a custom back and lumbar support with an elegant, lightweight design. There is no need to add on a separate, bulky lumbar which would otherwise create a central pressure point and would require constant adjustment.
Being an all mesh chair, the Diffrient World replaces traditional seat cushion with a non-stretch, low abrasion mesh. The Diffrient also has the option to add on a seat pad on top of the mesh, which I have to agree on, adds to its comfort. Also, the front edge of the seat has been eliminated from the Diffrient which solves the constant issue of hard edges putting pressure on the user’s knees and creating contact stress on the hamstrings. This allows for maximum comfort for every user.
Three words to sum up the Diffrient World? Simple. Beautiful. Functional.
